Assessing Infinity Focus: D850 vs D810

This page looks at infinity focus differences between the Nikon D850 and the Nikon D810.

When I was in the field in mid-October, I noticed that most of my Zeiss lenses (Otus and Milvus) were requiring focus well beyond the infinity mark. That behavior occurred in the range of 28°F to 40°F, and worsened the colder it was.

My concern was that some lenses would not be able to reach infinity focus at all, and in sub-freezing temperatures, the Zeiss Milvus 18mm f/2.8 and Zeiss Otus 55m f/1.4 were right at or near their hard mechanical limits. At one point I was pretty sure that I was unable to get the Otus 55/1.4 to infinity focus, and it might have been 26°F or so at that time, with my hands getting quite cold quite quickly (but I had no thermometer).

This comparison table was done at about 68°F. At this room temperature, there is partial but not total consistency with what I saw in the field. But the one thing that holds is that the lenses are less affected when relatively warm at 68°F than when 30°F to 40°F folder.
