Update 16 Jan 2018: Nikon has issued a firmware updater the is claimed to fix the serious image quality damage of long exposure noise reduction.

Udpdate 29 Dec 2017: enabling long exposure noise reduction (LENR) on the Nikon D850 results in a far noisier image. Be sure to DISABLE LENR for much superior results.

Here the Nikon D850 is pushed beyond its limits with a 30 second exposure at late dusk where there is still light, but where it is getting too dark to hike without a flashlight. The glowing mountaintop was beautiful to behold, but also far brighter than the darker lake area.
