This page looks at using multi-frame averaging for reducing noise arbitrarily low on the Nikon D850 monochrome. Frame-averaged images are compared to a single shot.
Images shot in 14-bit lossless compressed NEF, then converted to true monochrome DNG files using LibRaw Monochrome2DNG, which causes Adobe Camera Raw (or other raw converters) to see the files as true monochrome files and do no debayering as with a color camera. While the NEF files can be processed directly, the raw converter uses debayering in so doing, and so the results are much inferior and with artifacts, versus processing the file as a monochrome DNG.
