Processing

RAW files were processed using Nikon Capture NX2 v2.1.1 for Nikon and Canon Digital Photo Professional 3.5.2 for Canon.

Other RAW-file converters

Past experience has shown that Canon’s DPP and Nikon’s Capture NX2 provide top-notch image quality for their respective formats.

Other RAW-file converters might provide significantly different results, especially RAW Developer 1.8.2 for the Nikon D3x. Whereas Nikon’s Capture NX2 apparently has some built-in noise processing that cannot be disabled, this is not so with RAW Developer, and the results might not be acceptable at higher ISOs. As this report was being written, several vendors were preparing to release updates supporting the Nikon D3x and Canon 5D Mark II.
