Olympus Zuiko 50mm f/1.2

Focus Shift with Olympus Zuiko 50mm f/1.2

The Olympus Zuiko 50/1.2 used here was converted to Nikon mount and used with a lens adapter on the 21 megapixel Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III.

Compared to the Canon 50mm f/1.2L, out-of-focus foreground color fringing is much more pleasing. Background blur is similar to the Canon. For an old non-aspheric design, this is commendable. Its other optical properties are also of high quality. However, it is also fiendishly difficult to focus accurately by eye on Canon EOS. But on modern cameras like the Sony A7R, that issue disappears with high quality Live View (but focusing at f/2.8 recommended).

Focus shift is about equal to that of the Nikon 50/1.4, perhaps slightly better, a remarkable achievement for an f/1.2 non-aspherical lens.
