Pentax K3 II
Sigma 35mm f/1.4 4 DG HSM Art

SuperResolution: Checkerboard Effect

Tested with the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Pentax K (about $899) because quality with the PENTAX smc FA 31mm f/1.8 Limited was unacceptable.

Ironically, when I go looking for higher image quality (Pentax SuperResolution pixel shift mode), literally the very first frames I shoot show a problem.

The very first six frames I shot on the Pentax K3 II all show this issue; I shot an aperture series from f/1.4 through f/8 at shutter speeds from 1/200 sec @ f/1.4 to 1/8 sec @ f/8. The example shown here is from f/8, but all other shutter speeds and apertures show an identical problem, so the aperture and shutter speed are not at issue.

  • Save money by choosing the right lens for your needs the first time, particularly some of the new Sigma Art lenses vs Nikon and Canon.
  • Workflow discusses image organization, raw conversion and post processing. Many examples show processing parameters for direct insight into how the image was converted.
  • Jaw-dropping image quality found nowhere else utilizing Retina-grade images up to full camera resolution, plus large crops [past 2 years or so].
  • Real world examples with insights found nowhere else. Make sharper images just by understanding lens behavior you won’t read about elsewhere.
  • Aperture series from wide open through stopped down, showing the full range of lens performance and bokeh.
  • Optical quality analysis of field curvature, focus shift, sharpness, flare, distortion, and performance in the field.
