This aperture series evaluate the Pentax HD Limited 40mm f/2.8 on a real-world distant landscape subject that in particular shows us across the frame sharpness, and the effects of focus shift on such a scene.

The lens shade is not adequate to shade the lens when the sun is just outside the frame because sunlight grazes the front elemen. But this is true for lenses in general; nothing short of specialized rectangular lens shades can restrict the entry of light perfectly.

The lens was shaded with a hand as well as could be but the sun was just above the frame and this was a bit hit and miss, with multiple attempts needed to avoid the hand in the image (even so, some discoloration is see in the sky at f/2.8). The f/2.8 frame shows apparent veiling veiling flare near bottom, but this might also be at least in part water mist illuminate by the sun.
