Nikon D850
Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

Aperture Series: Monitor Pass Area, Sunset View to North

This distance scene evaluates the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art from f/1.4 through f/6.3 at far distance, which in general is a merciless trest of a lens that reveals flaws mercilessly (did I say that twice for a reason?!).

Images at sizes up to full camera resolution.

Adobe Camera Raw 10.4.0.976: view ACR settings. Camera Profile=Adobe Color.

Series was processed with color temperature and tint adjustments as per the findings on the SpyderCHECKER evaluation page except that 18 mireds difference was needed for a reasonably close match: 5500°K @ -5M for f/1.4 and 5000°K @ +2M for the other apertures. The resulting color is a reasonably close match, far better than the yellow-green tint if not compensated for. Why more mired difference was needed is unclear; perhaps the lighting itself changed, or perhaps the spectral distribution changes the gap in mireds between f/1.4 and f/2.

  • Jaw-dropping image quality found nowhere else utilizing Retina-grade images up to full camera resolution, plus large crops [past 2 years or so].
  • Real world examples with insights found nowhere else. Make sharper images just by understanding lens behavior you won’t read about elsewhere.
  • Aperture series from wide open through stopped down, showing the full range of lens performance and bokeh.
  • Optical quality analysis of field curvature, focus shift, sharpness, flare, distortion, and performance in the field.
