Sigma 35/1.4 DG HSM for Canon

Examples (Alpine Creek, Canon 5DM3)

Shot with the Canon 5D Mark III at ISO 100, ETTR used when possible for better image quality.

My goal here was to assess the overall image quality of the Sigma 35/1.4 DG HSM for field use at a range of apertures. I was also interested in field handling, an area with pleasant results: the high micro contrast at f/1.4 made accurate focus relatively easy.

Lighting conditions were dim late-day overcast with a steady change in color temperature towards dusk, so a best effort has been made to set a proper white balance for each photo.

Out of band comment: It is my distinct impression that the Canon 5D Mark III sensor is a limiting factor in the image quality seen here. The lens seems eminently capable; the image quality has a certain harshness to it that I believe is the Canon sensor (I am very used to the premium quality of the Nikon D800 sensor). This is purely subjective and absolutely not a “proof”, but it is my distinct impression that the quality is not what it could be and that this is not a lens issue.
