Nikon D850
Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

This pages looks at performance of the Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art with respect to flare when shot into difficult lighting.

Example: shooting close to the sun

The sun in this example was just above the edge of the frame towards top right. Even a Zeiss Otus has some challenges in such a scene.

The lens hood was in use but as with most circular or petal-type lens hoods, coverage is inadequate. It is critical to shade the lens from any non-image forming bright light.

The Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art shows moderately strong veiling flare under these conditions, with a substantial loss in overall lens contrast. Shading the lens from direct sunlight results in a major improvement to overall lens contrast.
