Nikon D850
Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

Examples, Focus Stacking: Eastern Sierra (Nikon D850)

These examples look into using the Nikon D850 Focus shift shooting feature to create images impossible to create with an 85mm lens at any aperture. An 85mm lens affords very little depth of field, indeed very little room for focus error even at f/8.

If you don’t see anything highly unusual about these images in a detail sense, then ponder any image of anything remotely approaching the near-to-far-far depth of these examples. The depth of field seen in many of these images is equivalent to something in the f/32 to f/128 range or so—without any diffraction issues.

Focus stacking with an 85mm lens in the field is extremely difficult; it is time consuming and very demanding to get the stepping between frames just right, with a very high error potential. The Nikon D850 Focus shift shooting feature eliminates that problem.
