Nikon D810
Sigma 12-24mm f/4 DG HSM Art

Examples: Eastern Sierra (Nikon D810)

Examples from the Eastern Sierra Nevada.

Rainbow trout

It was dark and all I could do was try to take the shot using my LED headlamp for illumination. This is actually extremely difficult to do, that is while providing reasonably even illumination on the subject, so I shot wide.

The Sigma 12-24/4A renders very sharp detail in central areas even wide open—see the crop.

The larger fish is a 23-inch 5-pound fish, exceptional for Saddlebag Lake (see the Zebco “De-Liar” below and to the right!) and the largest trout I have ever caught as of 2016. Few anglers are so fortunate, with most trout running 11" to 13" in the lake. The smaller 18-inch trout is a terrific catch in its own right, dwarfing 95% of the fish caught in Saddlebag Lake by a factor of 3X to 4X on weight! The 23" fish is a rarity (I lost another of similar size a few days later on the season closing day at sunset—the hook was through soft flesh and pulled out after five minutes of careful “play”!) I caught both of these fish in short order after driving 5 hours from home... fishing has its reward days for those days when such fantastic luck doesn’t occur (skill plays a big part too, at least for raising the odds of such a catch).

Special emphasis is placed on lens evaluation, focusing on Canon and Nikon and Sigma lenses, but with a few others like Rokinon/Samyang.

  • Make better images by learning how to get the best results right away.
  • Save money by choosing the right lens for your needs the first time, particularly some of the new Sigma Art lenses vs Nikon and Canon.
  • Workflow discusses image organization, raw conversion and post processing. Many examples show processing parameters for direct insight into how the image was converted.
  • Jaw-dropping image quality found nowhere else utilizing Retina-grade images up to full camera resolution, plus large crops [past 2 years or so].
  • Real world examples with insights found nowhere else. Make sharper images just by understanding lens behavior you won’t read about elsewhere.
  • Aperture series from wide open through stopped down, showing the full range of lens performance and bokeh.
  • Optical quality analysis of field curvature, focus shift, sharpness, flare, distortion, and performance in the field.
