The quality at 720p for the Nikon D4 and D800/D800 is far superior to full 1080 HD on a per-pixel basis, with a high impression of sharpness. It sure looks like the quality plus the huge space savings might make 720p a superior choice for Nikon users.
The Nikon D4 is clearly inferior to the D800/D800E at 720p.
For the Canon 5D Mark III, using 720p at 60 fps with intraframe compression results in enormous files that are 8-10X larger than those from the Nikon— with no obvious quality gain. There is no 30 fps option with intraframe compression.
