This example was taken in full sunlight at ISO 100, 1/8000 sec and f/1.4. In RAW processing an exposure compensation of -1/2 stop was applied. Even so, the highlights are blown, which makes it an extreme test of the 58/1.4 Nokton, and possibly a bit unfair. (It’s a pity that the Nikon D3 doesn’t offer ISO 50 or 25 to enable shooting at wide apertures in bright light).
The expected vignetting is visible, but this can be mostly eliminated in Capture NX 2 or similar RAW-file converter. At trace of purple fringing can be seen around the white details, but in view of the exposure, it’s really very well controlled, and unclear whether it’s partly due to the sensor, or strictly due to factors like axial chromatic aberration. Stopping down to f/2 at 1/8000 second eliminates all purple fringing (see crops).
