Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL

Comparison—58/1.4 Nokton vs NOCT-Nikkor

The results shown here are consistent with four other carefully-executed A/B comparisons; there can be no doubt that the Voigtlander Nokton 58/1.4 outperforms the NOCT-Nikkor by a wide margin on a entire-frame basis, at any aperture, though the NOCT can offer outstanding localized performance in a small area. The author has used five (5) different samples of the NOCT-Nikkor, and they all exhibited similar image rendition.

The results shown here were odd enough (for the NOCT) that four other A/B comparisons were made to confirm the behavior: the results were consistent, and focus mismatch has been ruled out. it’s just the way the NOCT-Nikkor performs. The Church rear image replicated these results exactly the same way: high central sharpness and contrast for the NOCT, much better overall detail for the Voigtlander Nokton.
