Choosing a Camera for Infrared Use

Some specialized vendors, such as LPD LLC (maxmax.com) offer a variety of infrared-converted cameras. The models that they offer are all good choices. Maxmax.com can convert other camera brands and models, including a camera body you already own, or you can buy a pre-converted camera, ready for use. The “safe” route is choosing a camera model that they’re already converting; some cameras can be difficult to convert and it might cost extra to convert a camera which is not yet familiar to them.

You might save some money converting a camera you already own, and the warranty will be void anyway.

Certain camera models cannot be converted because the infrared-blocking glass is permanently bonded to the sensor (though solvents might handle even such cameras). These are the exception, not the rule. Examples include the Nikon D2x.
