Leica MM vs M9P (Saddlebag Overlook, Yosemite)
The Leica M Monochrom and Leica M9P have exactly the same resolution, thus making an apples-to-apples comparison feasible with no resampling.
The goal? To see just how the Leica M Monochrom outperforms the Leica M9P (or does not). Three variants are shown, using the Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH FLE:
- Leica M Monochrom.
- Leica M9P (grayscale).
- Leica M9P (RGB).
Caveats:
- There was a 42-minute time gap between the two series, so the lighting changed somewhat.
- Any focus variation could not be helped; the two cameras were focused using the 1.4X and 1.25X magnifiers stacked for 1.75X precision; any difference has to be rangefinder precision and alignment, which cannot be helped.
- The tonal rendition of the Leica M9P grayscale version does not and cannot be matched to the Leica MM variant; brightness variations in places should be taken into account as could alter the perception of sharpness. However, the results are clear enough without worrying over this.
- Different mounting brackets on each camera mean slightly different framing; the scene has been aligned and cropped just slightly (no rotation done, which could alter sharpness).
