Leica M Monochrom Typ 246 as an Infrared Camera

Leica M cameras (M9, M9P, M240) have always had some infrared leakage (the Leica M8 has severe leakage), which is why my gray North Face Recon daypack renders as magenta with those cameras.

The Leica M Monochrom Typ 246 also has significant infrared leakage. This is both good and bad: good, because the MM246 can be used as an infrared camera and bad because infrared degrades image quality subtly (differential focus even with APO lenses).

There is no precise definition of infrared, but somewhere around 680nm is considered to be about where infrared starts (very deep red is around 630 nm). The human eye can see out to about 850nm (using an infrared LED this can be seen to be true), but this is so only in very dark conditions with a bright LED. See diglloyd Guide to Digital Infrared.
