Leica M10 Monochrom: Alternatives

This page discusses alternatives to the Leica M10 Monochrom.

A monochrome camera must do its filtration at time of exposure, using filters on the lens, thus baking-in all the tonal relationships. For general photography, this is a bit of an expense and hassle (carrying multiple color filters and for each filter size), but the improved results are well worth it. For example, a red filter to eliminate bluish atmospheric haze that often degrades distant landscapes.

With the use of appropriate cutoff filters, a monochrome sensor can also take small “slices” of spectrum to “see through” things. This can be used for forensic purposes by museums, law enforcement, etc. However, the Leica M10 Monochrom cuts off at around 720nm, so at best it gets into NIR (near infrared) and cannot capture longer-wave infrared needed for deeper penetration.
