Leica M10 Monochrom

Leica M10m Sensor Bifurcation

Back in 2009 I reported on a bifurcated sensor problem with the Leica M9.

Imagine my surprise in 2020 to come across the same phenomenon in the Leica M10 Monochrom. IMO, this renders the camera totally unacceptable, even if it is seen only occassionally, being mostly a problem in smooth tones. But isn’t that one big appeal of a monochrome camera—gradients and smooth tonality? A 1-point hiccup cannot be unseen once seen.

The sensor is apparently imaged during production in two halves, left and right. With the right subject matter such as a sky, the result is differing brightness between the halves, which is perceived as a vertical line dividing the sensor in half exactly at the half-way point: 3932 pixels across the 7864 frame.
