Examples: Focusing Error Case Study
When I first obtained the Leica 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M ASPH, my goal was to compare its performance to the Leica 28mm f/2 Summicron-M ASPH. Such a comparison presumes that both lenses can be focused accurately.
Alas, the 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M showed a significant backfocus, making it effectively impossible to construct a fair comparison*.
- The brand-new-out-of-the-box Leica 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M ASPH back-focused badly.
- The rental Leica 28mm f/2 Summicron-M ASPH focused perfectly.
* Because there is no Live View on the Leica M9, a lens calibration error is a non-starter, since rangefinder focusing is the only method of focusing (requiring both lens and camera to be in-spec to a high degree of precision).
