Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH

Aperture Series: 35/1.4 — Tile Rooftops Aerial (NEX7)

See a similar comparison on the Leica M9P.

This aperture series examines sharpness with the 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH FLE (2010 version) on the Sony NEX-7.

The Sony NEX-7 has an APS-C sensor, yielding an equivalent field of view of a 53mm lens.

The 35/1.4 MTF chart shown at right extends to the 11.75mm offset for the far edges of the NEX-7 frame, and to the 14mm offset for the extreme corners.

The “wave” in the MTF chart comes into play as the frame edges are approached, and drops to its low point near the far corners. This wave is almost certainly field curvature, so it is highly relevant to this test scene, which is all at a uniform ~infinity distance. We can expect sharpness to decline as the frame edges are approached, with even lower contrast into the corners.
