Leica 50mm f/2 Summicron-M

Examples: 50/2 Summicron-M (Variety)

I shot these examples to explore the optical behavior of the 50mm f/2 Summicron-M; I like to understand what I can expect from a lens, so a variety of ad-hoc shots as on this page help me explore the lens, to learn its behavior, to flush out any usability or focus accuracy issues, etc. I recommend this approach with any new lens.

Rose bushes in cozy nook with broom

I focused on the closest white rose, and was rewarded with sharp focus. Of some interest is the chair at lower right is also sharp well forward of this point, suggesting the same field curvature seen with the Golden Gate example.

Overall, I’d rate the bokeh (out of focus blur) as quite pleasant and free from distractions (based on other images as well). The f/2 aperture is capable of isolating a precise item within a scene as here, and it shows why no kind of zone focusing approximation can succeed; one must focus accurately because the zone of sharp focus here is only a few inches deep.
