Leica 16-18-21mm f/4 Tri-Elmar-M ASPH

16-18-21mm f/4 Tri-Elmar-M ASPH

The Leica 16-18-21mm f/4 Tri-Elmar-M ASPH (about $6295) includes the Universal Wide Angle Finder (as of 2012 in the USA).

While the Tri-Elmar-M is not designed as a zoom lens, it can be used at any intermediate focal length settings, though such intermediate settings presumably are not optimal. Still, there is likely to be modest performance loss especially with some stopping down.

Worth noting is that for an f/4 lens (or f/3.8)— the practical diffraction limit of a high-performing lens is around f/8 for the tiny photosites of high resolution digital cameras, such as the Sony A7R; this is visible in the slight drop in contrast at f/8 in the MTF charts, a trend which accelerates at f/11.
