Leica 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M ASPH

MTF: 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M ASPH

Performance is very high for a 28mm lens.

If anything, field shots suggest higher contrast centrally than the MTF chart indicates. The 28/2.8 is a very nice performer by f/5.6 to f/8.

Wide open at f/2.8, performance is very good to the edges, then drops off steadily. Stopping down to f/5.6, performance rises over the entire frame to an outstanding level.

Discussion follows below.

For the 2/28 and 2.8/28 2016 lenses, minor changes in the lens positions have been made that improve the contrast and resolution performance when being used on digital cameras. The MTF graphs in the technical data show the pure lens performance independent from the sensor or film, so the improvements are not readily visible. But on actual M or SL or Sony cameras, much better details and contrast will be seen, especially in the corners. Focus shift is on the same level as before.
