Leica M240
Leica 50mm f/2 APO-Summicron-M ASPH

Aperture Series: Church Mosaic and Lens Skew (M240)

Late 2013 sample, your author’s own copy. Like the previous sample, it has a slight left/right skew in which focus is closer on the right than the left.

Details: the early 2013 50/2 APO had flare problems, and the 2013 M240 had stability problems. Your author sent both items to Leica in September 2012, receiving brand-new replacements for both in late November. The camera and lens used here are those replacements. The lens skew persists just as with the first sample, a deeply disappointing outcome.

This target is extremely demanding; it reveals the slightest weakness or less than perfect planarity in any lens or camera alignment, including the very best. Or the slightest field curvature. The camera is guaranteed to be dead center by sighting down a line of bricks; there can be no misalignment of camera to subject.
