The intent of this series was to explore sharpness at wider apertures, but even more so to explore subject separation and bokeh possible at wider apertures, the f/2 maximum aperture being handicapped by a full stop versus the 50/1.4 Summilux and two stops over the 50/0.95 Noctilux.
In general, subject separation is often degraded by field curvature: an uneven sharpness curve (non-planar) distracts by making mid-zones or edges/corners sharper forward or back of the nominal plane of focus; the Noctilux could almost be said to be notorious in this regard, with its rearward sharpness curve to the edges and corners (see the Garlic example).
