Contrast wide open is already quite high, declining gracefully to the edges an corners.
Stopping down to f/8 drops overall contrast due to diffraction, but does raise contrast on fine structures in the mid zones and corners/edges. Perhaps f/5.6 would deliver a small improvement to the edges and corners and without the overall contrast drop from diffraction.
But the bottom line is that performance varies only a little, and that depth of field is the real consideration.
