Dynamic range is often studied technically, but it boils down to usability in these ways:
- How effective is the metering at using the full sensor potential without blowing highlights or pinning blacks?
- Corollary to the above: is ETTR technique useful given the camera’s metering algorithms?
- Can dark areas be opened up a stop or two for shadow detail with ugly noise or banding?
- How much care is need to achieve optimal results and more important: how much care is needed to avoid damage to images such as blown highlights.
