Leica 21mm f/3.4 Super-Elmar-M ASPH

Examples: Color Uniformity on M9P

On my Leica M9P, the 21mm f/3.4 Super-Elmar-M had a persistent cyan cast in the lower left corner (in landscape orientation). Always the same corner, which means top left or bottom right for vertical shots, depending on how I held the camera.

The issue shows up as green/cyan in the lower left corner. Leica’s commentary follows after the examples below.

Color shading and lens correction on the M9

Color shading is a fact of life with M lenses: the steep ray angles of M lenses cause an interaction with the infrared-blocking glass over the sensor, causing a shift to cyan towards the corners, increasing as the corners are approached.

The M9’s firmware is supposed to correct it evenly for 6-bit coded Leica lenses. So one must conclude that either the lens I shot is outside the normal range, or that the lens profile in the camera firmware is just plain wrong.
