Leica M240

Compared: Noctilux, Summilux, APO-Summicron, Zeiss Planar (M240, Tioga Cabin #9 Chair)

June 2013 lens sample, which suffered from poor flare control.

The Leica 50mm f/2 APO-Summicron-M ASPH is perhaps the most highly corrected lens in the Leica M lineup, offering very high performance with a flat field (little or no field curvature).

How does the flat field of the 50mm f/2 APO ASPH pan out for scenes which are essentially planar in nature?

The question is an eminently practical one: between possible focus shifts and field curvature with each lens, a lens that delivers predictable flat field performance is a huge simplification and offers the chance to stop down much less in order to achieve peak image quality. Not every image needs this type of behavior, but in many cases it is a big advantage.
