Focus Shift with the 50/2 APO ASPH (Dolls)

Leica 24-megapixel M240 at ISO 200, full-range optimal exposure, approximate 1:11 reproduction ratio.

This meticulously-executed test used a focusing rail to bracket focus in 2mm increments in order to evaluate peak sharpness and focus shift— necessary for an ultra high performance lens.

This study should not be construed as applying to midrange or infinity focus; behavior of many lenses varies with focusing distance.

Also, even the best lenses have some weakness. The 50/2 AA is clearly a very high performer, but it is not perfect.
