24-megapixel Leica SL
Leica 90mm f/4 Macro-Elmar-M

Aperture Series: Bristlecone Log On Hillside, Harsh Sunlight

This series from f/4 - f/8 looks at peak sharpness under harsh daylight conditions. I am not keen on the lighting or composition, but it is a useful study.

Bristlecone Log On Hillside, Harsh Sunlight

Adobe Camera Raw 9.6 (625): ACR settings, Camera Profile = Embedded. No lens corrections.

It is very difficult to focus an f/4 lens on a scene like this, even with a high-res EVF: it is very eas to focus just a hair too close or too far. For this reason, use of f/5.6 or f/8 is strongly advised with a scene like this.

Sharpness is optimal by f/5.6, with f/8 bringing more depth of field. There are some variations in sharpness near to far (corners oddly sharp at distance versus mildly blurred more central areas at some distance), suggesting a mild field curvature. However, this may actually be due to an interaction with sensor cover glass (increased astigmatism).
