Zeiss ZM 85mm f/2 Sonnar

Distortion for ZM 85/2 Sonnar

Barrel distortion (bowing out) is less than 1% into the far corners, and while this is low and easily corrected, it is notably greater in magnitude than the ZM 85/4 Tele-Tessar distortion, whose 0.15% pincushion distortion is effectivel zero.

The ZM 85/2 Sonnar barrel distortion is almost exactly same in magnitude as the Leica 90/2 APO-Summicron pincushion distortion; the two lenses are the same in the amount by opposite in manner (barrel vs pincushion). Your author finds barrel distortion (bowing out) much less visually objectionable than pincushion distortion (bowing in).
