Leica 100mm f/2.8 APO-Macro-Elmarit-R

MTF: 100/2.8 APO-Macro-Elmarit-R

Oddly, the Leica 100mm f/2.8 APO-Macro-Elmarit-R does show some field curvature in the field on real images, and this is likely the reason for the save in its MTF chart.

MTF chart

Peak performance might be reached at f/4 as field shots suggest, but using f/5.6 provides a margin for focusing error. Leica does not provide an f/4 MTF chart.

MTF wide open at f/2.8 is very high, but does drop off to the corners.

Stopping down to f/5.6 or f/8 drops contrast on coarse structures slightly, but evens out the field such that performance in all areas of the frame is superb. The remaining “wave” in the MTF chart is likely the lingering effect of a field curvature, and will not be an issue for 3D photography as it is a very small effect.
