Leica 100mm f/2.8 APO-Macro-Elmarit-R

Examples: Nikon D800E + 100/2.8 APO-Macro-Elmarit-R (Dolls)

The Leica 100mm f/2.8 APO-Macro-Elmarit-R (converted to Nikon mount) delivers a superb image on the 36-megapixel Nikon D800E.

The Leica 100/2.8 APO was chosen preferentially over the Zeiss 100mm f/2 for this scene because of the Leica’s superior control over color “bokeh” at wider apertures, something I felt to be important for a precision comparison in my review of the Nikon D800E at the time.

The Leica 100/2.8 is not necessarily superior for more distant work, having some slight field curvature which the Zeiss 100/2 is blissfully free of. The Zeiss 100/2 also has a more graceful and rapid-onset defocus effect and offers an f/2 aperture. The right bike for the right trail.
