MTF can be measured from a real lens, or computed from a lens design. Leica uses computed MTF which therefore means the graphs are fantasy graphs assuming perfect (impossible) actual lenses. Long experience with a lot of Leica M glass shows that real lenses rarely if ever are fully symmetric across the field, nor do they perform as well as computed charts suggest.
This page looks at MTF for the Leica 16-35mm f/3.5-4.5 Super-Vario-Elmar-SL ASPH.
The MTF charts show that the Leica 16-35mm f/3.5-4.5 Super-Vario-Elmar-SL ASPH performs at or very close to its best performance when shot wide open. In MTF terms, performance is exceptional over most of the frame, with the edge and corner areas more ordinary (and field shots do not impress at 16mm). Since distortion correction reduces MTF, and the MTF charts are optical performance without correction, the MTF charts are unachievable. More on that further below.
