Lens Flare for Leica 16-35mm f/3.5-4.5 Super-Vario-Elmar-SL ASPH
This page looks at flare control under field conditions showing examples with the lens hood on (as always), and both shielding the front lens element from extraneous light, and without.
In the examples that follow, toggle to compare unshaded vs shaded. I use my hand to block the light when shooting in the field, for all lenses but with wide angle zooms, this can become difficult or impossible at times due to footing, angle of sun, etc.
The MTF charts for the Leica 16-35mm show very high contrast at all levels. But when taking real images, real MTF is reduced by lens flare, if any. It is just one of several reasons that MTF charts are only a starting point for evaluating image quality.
