SHOOTOUT: Fujifilm GFX 50s vs 35mm (late 2017 view)

This page references a few images found in diglloyd Advanced DSLR; some of these are accessible only to subscribers to that publication.

Here I offer my view on the early 2017 medium format Fujifilm GFX vs the late 2017 Nikon D850 ). I have studied the 35mm vs medium format issue with respect to the previous 35mm king-of-the-heap (Nikon D810) for some time, but the D850 improves the DSLR argument significantly, so the question arises whether the D850 changes the equation. I cite my subjective impressions as well as facts of several kinds supporting those impressions.

The Nikon D850 is a 35mm format DSLR (nominally 36 X 24mm). Its image quality is the best yet available in the 35mm format, a notch up from the Nikon D810 in resolution, a major step forward in long exposure capability, and it incorporates numerous enhancements over the Nikon D810. It is a very fine camera capable of outstanding imagery, standing heads and shoulders above any other 35mm camera in total capability as an all-arounder. In a short-sighted move by Nikon that could have crossed the DSLR-mirrorless gap, the D850 has no EVF option, unlike both Sony mirrorless and the Fujifilm GFX. Still, the D850 will become my new workhorse camera, supplanting the Nikon D810.
