As metered

Increase Image Quality by Optimal Exposure (ETTR, Dolls)

Image quality with any digital camera can be maximized by paying attention to metered (auto) exposure versus what is optimal for the subject matter, which means getting the maximum light to the sensor that it can handle, without blowing out details.

With most cameras, including the Hasselblad X1D, optimal exposure is often a full stop greater than metered exposure, and frequently as much as 1.5 stops. Of course there are scenes in which the metered exposure is too great, but I have also observed metering indicate an exposure error as ghastly as 3 stops too dark.

Put another way: camera metering vs optimal exposures often exceeds the 66% sensor area difference between the medium format Hasselblad X1D sensor versus the 35mm full-frame Nikon D810 or Canon 5Ds R sensor. A 35mm full frame camera when properly exposed can thus collect more photons than a medium format camera exposed with less care. That fact along with a top-notch camera like the Nikon D810 at ISO 64 make the medium format advantage dubious unless technical execution is optimal.
