Violet fringing is a near-universal issue with lenses; it is a color correction error that varies only by degree. Leica’s marketing claim that S lenses are “devoid of imaging errors” apparently excludes color correction entirely, as will be shown here.
The usual cause of violet fringing is axial (longitudinal) chromatic aberration (ACA), though this might include spherochromaticism and other color aberrations. Axial chromatic aberration is present even in lenses that are well corrected for lateral chromatic aberration (LCA). Primary longitudinal chromatic aberration is generally very well controlled with S lenses, but secondary longitudinal chromatic aberration is almost always present in any lens with a reasonably fast aperture.
