Real-world dynamic range is a major plus when the camera has it. It is one reason your author considers Micro Four Thirds problematic for field use: there just isn’t much to work with in dark areas for real-world field images; the images break down quickly with low real dynamic range (range and shadow quality).
As a medium format camera, the 645Z brings very high expectations for dynamic range. These examples use extreme adjustments to show how good the 645 sensor is. The camera seems “odd” in shooting: sometimes more exposure seems to have little effect, almost as if there is special handling going on. Whatever it is, it works exceedingly well.
The extreme adjustments here are not proposed as the very best conversion or the end product; rather, they are used to extract the maximum dynamic range versus the dark originals.
