MTF for Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro STM
With the debut of the Canon EOS R system, Canon continues to publish the same inadequate 10 and 30 lp/mm MTF charts it has for years, and for only one aperture (wide open) and without specifying spectral balance or focusing distance (presumably infinity). Net/net the MTF chart offers limited insight versus charts from Zeiss with white light made measured from actual lenses. Still, the chart is suggestive of performance at 40 lp/mm and beyond.
The MTF chart for the Canon RF 35 mm f/1.8 Macro STM shows very strong central performance that rolls off to what will be perceived as not quite crisp. How much the lens sharpness up with stopping down is unclear (since Canon provides only f/1.8), but field shots can establish what the gain are—probably substantial.
