Study: Focusing Margin of Error (Dolls)

The Olympus Zuiko 75mm f/1.8 ED is a very sharp lens, but how much margin for error is available when focusing at relatively close range? And how is the total result affected by small changes in focus?

Entire frame

This exposure was a full two (2) stops more than the camera indicated was correct; a 1-stop pull was used. The +2 exposure cuts the noise in half by √4 = 2. Always use ETTR with small sensor cameras to minimize noise.

The results shown here are were taken at a distance of about 1.95 meters, which equates to a reproduction ratio of about 1:25— a tight head and shoulders portrait range.
