Fujifilm X-Pro1

RAW File vs JPEG Exposure (Flowers)

This page used SilkyPix for RAW conversion.

The Fuji X-Pro1 offers a wide dynamic range with lovely color. That full range is available in RAW only— an image shot in JPEG has the exposure, white balance, color space, etc “baked in”.

With proper care (exposure, white balance, quality level, use of AdobeRGB, minimal sharpening), the JPEG file can preserve most of what’s there. The issue is that “proper care” means examining each and every image for optimal parameters— very interruptive to a photographic flow. It is so much easier and more flexible to shoot RAW, then make those decisions later.

Without shooting RAW, the photographer runs the risk of a loss of image quality, which would be a shame given the high quality of the X-Pro1 sensor. Certain cameras do have “dynamic range” settings and these can help fit the available sensor data into JPEG, but it is still baked-in, and not necessarily optimal.
