Fujifilm XPro2 Raw File Format, Uncompressed and Compressed
The Fujifilm X-Pro2 offers both uncompressed and lossless-compressed raw format. Both formats are equal in quality, but the lossless-compressed format saves substantially on space usage.
Uncompressed raw format
File sizes in uncompressed raw (RAF) format are a whopping 50.1 MB. At 14 bits per pixel, 24M * 14/8 = 42 megabytes for image data alone (uncompressed). The remaining 8MB difference indicates that uncompressed raw pixel data is stored as 16-bit values with the two high order bits as zeroes: 24M * 16/8 = 48MB. Metadata and embedded JPEG add a few more megabytes.
With savings of 20% to 50%, the lossless-compressed format is much more appealing in storage terms—see discussion below.
