Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S

MTF for Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S

With the debut of the Nikon Z system and the Nikon Z7 with its sensor needing 116 lp/mm, Nikon continues to promulgate the same inappropriate 10 and 30 lp/mm MTF charts it has for years, and for only one aperture (wide open) and without specifying spectral balance. Net/net the MTF chart offers limited insight versus charts from Zeiss with white light made measured from actual lenses. Still, the chart is suggestive of performance at 40 lp/mm and beyond.

The computed-not-measured theoretical MTF chart for the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S show extremely high overall contrast at f/2.8 (red lines) with extremely high micro contrast in the center dropping off steadily to very good levels into the corners. The lines are not very believable at the wide end, where the claim is that at 30 lp/mm, contrast is 98%—maybe but I don’t know of any real lens capable of that—it’s not even clear that this is theoretically possible when diffraction is taken into account and the chart is almost certainly a computed fantasy chart that takes no account of diffraction. The charts are not believable.
