Olympus OM-D E-M1

Olympus E-M1 Real-World Noise

At base ISO 200 with an absolutely perfect ETTR exposure, the EM1 sensor shows the limits of its sensor size (tiny photosites with limited S/N quality): there is frequently a tight grain to the images (noise).

This page shows several examples of the noise behavior at base ISO and under ideal exposure; it doesn’t get better than that in favor of the camera. But in the real world, exposure is often a stop low or more (particularly with auto exposure), a higher ISO might be used too, and hence the noise issues become even more relevant.

Moreover, some images demand to be pushed for desired brightness and/or shadows might need to be raised. Hence use of ETTR exposure is strongly recommended for EM1 users.
