Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II

HighRes Sensor Shift Artifacting (Dana Lake, Water View)

The hi-res sensor shift mode of the Olympus E-M5 Mark II is a wonderful beneft for increased detail together with reduced noise — a winning combination.

However, for general purpose landscape photography, subject movement can be a serious problem for image quality, generating ugly artifacting: anything moving, such as water, grass and leaves. Your author observed many such cases in the field and these severely restrict the usefulness of sensor shift mode, particularly on windy days, and even when the shutter speed would be ample for conventional single-frame exposures.

Example: Dana Lake, water view

This example crop taken Aperture Series @ 7mm: Dana Lake, Water View (EM5 II, HighRes Mode). The effect of moving subject matter is to generate an ugly cross-hatching pattern.
