The strength of the Foveon sensor in the Sigma DP1 Merrill at capturing fine detail on a per-pixel basis is extraordinary.
But can a 14.25 megapixel finished image from the DP1M compete with a state of the art 24-megapixel image from the Nikon D600, which has a 28% linear resolving power advantage, albeit with a Bayer-pattern sensor?
Much has been written about the relative merits of a true-color sensor, but at some point more megapixels trumps fewer megapixels. The cutoff can be subject dependent to a modest degree, but this particular subject offers both extremely fine detail throughout, as well as a serious color capture challenge. Accordingly, a comparison should judge two key aspects of image quality:
